Coda

After I made the screencast for this talk, the Encyclopedia Britannica posted two <a href="http://blogs.britannica.com/blog/main/2007/06/web-20-the-sleep-of-reason-part-i/">blog</a> <a href="http://blogs.britannica.com/blog/main/2007/06/web-20-the-sleep-of-reason-part-i/">entries</a> by Michael Gorman about Web 2.0 and collective knowledge. He is not a fan. All irony aside about Michael Gorman discussing anything through a <a href="http://www.libraryjournal.com/article/CA502009.html">blog post,</a> the episode is providing a good example of the speed of Twitter in spreading information through the community of librarians.

At around 1pm EDT on June 12, 2007, Karen Schneider tweeted the existence of the Gorman posts. Much discussion followed. By 3pm EDT the same day, Twittering librarian Jason Griffey had a <a href="http://www.jasongriffey.net/wp/2007/06/12/gorman-again/">post</a> on his blog Pattern Recognition addressing many of Gorman's arguments. His post begins "Karen twittered the latest Michael Gorman insanity". More thoughtful and well reasoned <a href="http://www.jasongriffey.net/wp/2007/06/13/shirky-ftw/">blog posts</a>, many by other Twittering librarians soon followed. Twitter played a big role in expediting the responses to, and discussion of, Gorman's posts.

On July 13, 2007, responses to Gorman were rolling in from many parts of the Internet. Twittering librarians pointed out new posts to each other and discussed the issues. Take a look at this screenshot:

<a title="Photo Sharing" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/dwfree1967/544108274/"><img width="491" height="500" alt="...Parsing Gorman" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1346/544108274_94ddd98d35.jpg" /></a>

People point out new responses, give information about books mentioned in said responses, notice potential gender inequality, and ever get a little <a href="http://wanderingeyre.com/2007/06/13/out-of-context-or-being-a-hypocrite/">trivial</a>. And the best Tweet ever.

<a title="Photo Sharing" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/dwfree1967/544108278/"><img width="500" height="62" alt="Best Tweet Ever" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1308/544108278_6390d2aee6.jpg" /></a>

But of course all of this Web 2.0 nonsense is just "a cultural and intellectual catastrophe".
